Kettles

How do I clean the exterior of my kettle?toggle

A damp cloth with very little detergent can be used to wipe the body of your kettle. Once wiped over, dry with a soft clean cloth.

My brand new kettle has a strange smell and the water has a taste. How do I rectify this?toggle

This can often be caused by different mineral deposits in the water supply. However, you can try a vinegar solution:

  • Fill the kettle with 3 cups of white vinegar and the remainder with water and allow to stand overnight. DO NOT BOIL.

Empty the solution from the kettle. Fill the kettle with clean water, bring to boil and then discard the water. Repeat and the kettle will then be ready to use.

My water level has condensation in it. Is there a reason for this?toggle

When only boiling a small amount of water, condensation can sometimes show in the water window. If the kettle has a larger volume of water in it, the condensation will not occur.

My Kettle will not stop boiling. Is there something I can do?toggle

At times, the filter inside your kettle can become dislodged. If this is the case, lift the lid and check if it’s in place. Refer to your instruction booklet for directions.

What can I do to keep my kettle in good condition?toggle

Mineral deposits in tap water may build up inside your kettle over time. To remove this build up, use Sunbeam Liquid Descaler (KE0100) which is a simple to use, non-toxic cleaner. Alternatively you can try the following:

  • Fill the kettle with 3 cups of white vinegar and the remainder with water and allow to stand overnight. DO NOT BOIL.
  • Empty the solution from the kettle. Fill the kettle with clean water, bring to boil and then discard the water. Repeat and the kettle will then be ready to use.

What is Sunbeam's 3-Way Safety System?toggle

Safety is a major consideration in the design of a Sunbeam kettle. This is why we have developed our 3-Way Safety System, which ensures that your kettle will:

  • 1. Automatically switch off after boiling
For convenience, safety and energy efficiency, your Sunbeam kettle will automatically switch off after boiling.
  • 2. Cut-out for boil-dry-protection
If the kettle is operated without water, it will automatically cut-out, preventing any damage to the element. If this occurs, allow the kettle to cool before filling with cold water and re-boiling.
  • 3. Shut-down in case of overheating
In the event of overheating, the kettle will automatically shut down to prevent further damage. Should this occur, take your kettle to a Sunbeam Service Centre or Appointed Service Agent.

Why is my kettle noisy despite having Quite Boil technology?toggle

This may be due to infrequent cleaning of the kettle. It is important to descale your kettle regularly to maintain the Quiet Boil technology and to prolong the life of the kettle.

You can purchase the Sunbeam Liquid Descaler (KE0100) here.

White wine vinegar or lemon juice can also be used.  Please read the kettle instructional booklet for more information.

Why doesn't my kettle automatically switch off?toggle

If your kettle isn't automatically switching itself off, there is a fault with the switch.

You will need to take the kettle:

  • If within the warranty period, back to the point of sale (along with proof of purchase) OR
  • If outside the warranty period, to an authorised Service Agent

Applicable to all models: All

Why was the water gauge in my kettle discoloured?toggle

Mineral deposits in water may cause the kettle interior to discolour.

To remove this buildup, you can:

  • Fill the kettle with 3 cups of white vinegar and remainder water.
  • Allow to stand overnight, making sure you do not boil.
  • Discard solution, refill kettle with water, boil & discard.

If this does not get rid of the buildup you can then purchase the Sunbeam liquid descaler which is available from an authorised Service Agent.

Coffee

The steam wand on my coffee machine seems to be blocked. How do I clear the blockage?toggle

With the machine switched off, visually inspect the steam nozzle to see if it is physically blocked (for example, milk may have lodged and solidified in the mouth of the valve).

If it is blocked, you should be able to clear it with a small pin.

You may also need to prime the unit (to clear out any air pockets that may have formed).

  • Make sure the water tank/reservoir is all the way in.
  • Place a bowl under the steam wand (and if applicable, under the hot water wand as well).
  • Turn on the steam wand (and if applicable, hot water wand) and let it run for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

This should help clear any "air lock".

Electric Blankets

The control on my single electric blanket is on the wrong side. What can I do?toggle

If you have a single tie-down or Fitted electric blanket, you could turn the blanket over so that the control is on the preferred side. Note that this will result in the control socket being on top of the blanket rather than underneath it. Alternatively, contact Sunbeam Customer Service for a replacement control that has a longer cord that runs underneath the mattress so that the control is on the preferred side.

One side of my electric blanket is not heating. What could be wrong?toggle

If one side of your double, queen or king side electric blanket fails to heat, this could be the result of a fault within the electric blanket or the control. To identify the source of the fault, take the control from the side of the bed that is working and plug it into the side that is not heating. Be sure to switch the control to the off position and turn the power off at the power outlet before removing the control from the blanket. Connect the control to the side that is not heating before turning on the power and switching the control on. If this side of the blanket now heats, there is a fault with the other control. Contact Sunbeam Customer Service for a replacement control. Be sure to have the control handy so that you can quote the model number on the back for a suitable replacement.

If the blanket still does not heat with the working control, there is a fault within the blanket itself, and you will require a replacement. If the blanket is within warranty return it to the place of purchase with your receipt. If it is not within warranty contact Sunbeam Customer Service or an authorised Service Agent.

How much does my electric blanket cost to operate?toggle

Electric blankets and heated throws are one of the most cost-effective ways to keep warm, as they only warm your bed or body, and do not waste energy heating the room or the entire house. A Safe & Sound electric blanket uses 150 watts maximum (at the highest setting), which costs around 2 cents per hour . Once your selected temperature has been reached, the electric blanket or throw only uses the amount of power required to maintain that heat setting, making it even more energy efficient.

My electric blanket has a digital control with a boost button. How does the Boost function work?toggle

The Boost function is idea for preheating the bed, or for an extra burst of heat during chilly nights. Pressing the Boost button heats the blanket to the maximum heat setting for 30 minutes, and then returns the blanket to the previously selected heat setting.

Pressing the boost button during the boost period will restart the 30 minute boost cycle. To interrupt the boost cycle, move the switch to the OFF position and then turn it back on.

My electric blanket has a 9 heat control with two timer settings (75 mins and 12 hrs). When does the light on the control go out?toggle

There are two lights on the 972A6 electric blanket control, one behind the temperature dial to indicate the selected temperature setting, and one labelled Timer Off.

When the blanket is switched ON and heating (i.e. during the selected timer period) the light behind the temperature dial illuminates to indicate that the blanket is on and heating, and the timer light is OFF.

Once the timer period has ended the temperature dial light goes out and the blanket switches off. The Timer Off light illuminate to indicate that the timer period has ended. To restart the timer period, move the slide switch to the off position then back to the selected timer setting.

If a fault is detected within the blanket, the timer light will FLASH.

When using my new electric blanket I seem to get a slight tingling sensation. What causes this and is it cause for concern?toggle

If you experience a slight tingling sensation when using your electric blanket, this is most likely caused by static electricity. Polyester bedding can often increase the static within your bed. To eliminate the static, remove the controls and wash the blanket according to the instructions. If the static tingling continues, return the electric blanket to the place of purchase for a replacement.

What safety features do Sunbeam Safe & Sound electric blankets have?toggle

Sunbeam's exclusive SleepPerfect® Technology provides nine levels of safety protection, making Sunbeam's Safe & Sound range safer than any other.

In addition to regulating the temperature, the microprocessor provides overheat, short circuit and arc protection. In the unlikely event that this microprocessor fails, a second back-up microprocessor activates, providing over-temperature control, overheat and short circuit protection. Finally, a fuse link located in the blanket socket provides mechanical overheat and overcurrent protection. This safety system is so sophisticated it can even detect if the control is not connected to the blanket correctly.

Why is the light on my electric blanket control flashing?toggle

If you have a 9 heat timer control model 972A6 or 972A5 (refer to the rear of the control for the model number) it could mean that a fault has been detected within the blanket or control. Switch the control to the off position and turn the power off at the power outlet. Check that the control is inserted into the socket on the blanket correctly before turning the power on at the outlet and switching the control on again. If the light continues to flash, contact Sunbeam Customer Service for assistance.

If you have a 9 heat timer control model 972A1, a flashing Timer light indicates that the timer period has ended (75 minutes or 12 hours, depending on the setting you have selected). To restart the timer period, move the slide switch to the off position then back to the selected timer setting.

Why does my electric blanket come with two controls?toggle

All double, queen and king size electric blankets are supplied with two controls so personal comfort levels can be set on each side of the bed.

What is SleepPerfect Technology?toggle

All Sunbeam Safe & Sound electric blankets contain our exclusive SleepPerfect Technology which senses changes in room and body temperature and adjusts the power input to maintain your selected heat setting. So no matter how cold it gets, SleepPerfect® Technology ensures your comfort level is just right.

SleepPerfect Technology is also fast. It heats the blanket to maximum temperature in just 10 minutes – a fraction of the heat up time of other electric blanket, so there's no need for hours of preheating before bedtime. Plus, SleepPerfect® Technology includes nine levels of safety protection, making Sunbeam Safe & Sound® electric blankets safer than any other.

What is cosy feet heating, and can it be controlled separately to the rest of the blanket?toggle

Cosy feet heating refers to extra warmth at the foot area of the blanket. It delivers extra heat to your feet, while keeping the rest of your body comfortably warm. The heating wires are closer together in the foot zone of the blanket, making this area around 8°C warmer than the body zone. It is part of the blanket's overall heating element and cannot be controlled separately.

What is the difference between a Fitted and Tie-Down electric blanket?toggle

Just like a fitted sheet, a Sunbeam fitted electric blanket has deep 50cm sides – to fit even the deepest mattress – and a strong elastic cord to keep it in place. A fully fitted electric blanket covers the entire top surface of the mattress and is much easier to fit and remove from the bed. A Tie-Down electric blanket has cotton tie tapes that are secured underneath the mattress to keep it in place. Most Sunbeam Safe & Sound electric blankets are fully fitted for added convenience.

What is the benefit of a Safe & Sound Waterproof electric blanket, and what is it made from?toggle

Designed to keep kids warm and the mattress dry, the Safe & Sound Waterproof electric blanket is a waterproof mattress protector and electric blanket in one. It contains a durable waterproof inner membrane that prevents spills from reaching the heating wires or soaking through to the mattress. This clever electric blanket can stay on the bed year round, simply detach the control and store during the warmer months. And like all Sunbeam electric blankets, it can even be machine washed and tumble dried.

  • Top: printed polyester polar fleece
  • Membrane: polyurethane
  • Blanket base; non-woven polyester
  • Fitted skirt: polyester

Can I use my electric blanket on a latex mattress?toggle

Yes, your Sunbeam Electric Blanket can be used on a latex mattress, providing that the blanket remains smooth and crease-free. Electric blankets should not be used on latex mattresses with uneven surfaces, such as those shaped like an egg carton.

Can I use my electric blanket on a futon?toggle

No, Sunbeam electric blankets cannot be used on futons, as the uneven surface can cause damage to the heating wire, potentially resulting in a safety issue. If you have a futon, Sunbeam recommends using a Safe & SoundHeated Throw, which has flexible heating wire specially designed for this type of application. Always ensure that the throw rug is placed over the top of your body, not underneath you.

Can I use my electric blanket on an adjustable bed?toggle

No, Sunbeam electric blankets cannot be used on adjustable beds, as this can cause damage to the heating wire and potentially result in a safety issue. If you have an adjustable bed, Sunbeam recommends using a Safe & Sound Heated Throw, which has flexible heating wire specially designed for this type of application. Always ensure that the throw rug is kept clear of any moving parts and is placed over the top of your body, not underneath you.

Can I use my electric blanket on a waterbed?toggle

No, Sunbeam electric blankets cannot be used on waterbeds, as the uneven surface can cause damage to the heating wire, potentially resulting in a safety issue. If you have a waterbed, Sunbeam recommends using a Safe & Sound Heated Throw, which has flexible heating wire specially designed for this type of application. Always ensure that the throw rug is kept clear of any moving parts and is placed over the top of your body, not underneath you.

Can I store my blanket during the warmer months?toggle

Yes. While many of Sunbeam's Safe & Sound electric blankets are designed to stay on the bed year round as a comfortable underlay, you can store your blanket if you wish. Simply remove the controls, roll or fold the blanket loosely and place it in a plastic bag or blanket storage bag. Avoid pressing sharp creases into the blanket as this may damage the wiring. You do not need to add mothballs or other items to the blanket during storage.

Can I leave my electric blanket on the bed all year round?toggle

Yes, it is safe to leave your electric blanket on the bed all year round. Simply detach the controls and store in a safe, dry place during the warmer months. Several Sunbeam electric blankets, such as our Safe & Sound Quilted, Fleecy and Waterproof models, are actually designed to be used all year round as a comfortable underlay or mattress protector.

Can I use an electric blanket if I suffer from asthma or allergies?toggle

Yes, in fact an electric blanket can help alleviate asthma and allergy symptoms. Your mattress can contain up to two litres of moisture, not to mention the skin and hair cells that the human body sheds every day. This warm, humid environment is the perfect breeding ground for dust mites, which can trigger asthma and allergy symptoms. Regular use of an electric blanket will evaporate the moisture from your mattress, keeping your bed dry and healthy.

Our Safe & Sound Antibacterial electric blanket is ideal for asthma and allergy sufferers. This fully fitted electric blanket is made using Eastlon® antibacterial treated fibre to keep it fresher and more hygienic. Unlike other antibacterial treatments, Eastlon® is incorporated into the fibre so it won't wash out, even when washed regularly in hot water, as recommended for allergen control.

Can I use a woollen underlay or mattress protector with my electric blanket?toggle

Yes, if you have a Safe & Sound electric blanket manufactured in 2005 or later, it can be used in conjunction with an underlay, providing it does not have a heavy rubber backing. The underlay or mattress protector can be placed either on top of the electric blanket or underneath it. Please note that your electric blanket may take longer to heat up should you place the underlay over the top of it.

If you have any other Sunbeam electric blanket (i.e. not Safe & Sound) or one manufactured before 2005, you should only place the underlay or mattress protector underneath the electric blanket. Placing a heavy underlay over the top of this type of blanket may trap the heat and inadvertently activate the safety overheat protection system, which cannot be reset.

If using a magnetic underlay, you should check with the supplier of the underlay to ensure its effectiveness when used in conjunction with an electric blanket.

How do I know if my old electric blanket is safe?toggle

Sunbeam recommends that you check your electric blanket regularly for signs of wear or damage, particularly on the power cord. If your blanket is more than 10 years old, it is recommended that you have it checked by a qualified service person, or replace it.

Recent changes to the Australian and New Zealand safety standards have made overheat protection mandatory on all electric blankets sold in Australia and New Zealand. While all Sunbeam electric blankets have contained overheat protection since 1991 (and most long before this), older blankets or other brands may not be equipped with this important safety feature.

Does more heat settings mean a hotter electric blanket?toggle

No. The maximum temperature (and wattage) of the blanket is the same regardless of the number of settings. Setting 10 on a 10 heat control will produce the same heat as setting 3 on a 3 heat control. The more settings you have simply gives you greater choice and more control over the heat of the blanket.

How long is the guarantee period on Sunbeam electric blankets?toggle

All Sunbeam Safe & Sound electric blankets have a three year replacement guarantee. All other Sunbeam electric blankets have a two year replacement guarantee. Please retain your sales receipt as proof of purchase.

How long do electric blankets take to heat up?toggle

Sunbeam's exclusive SleepPerfect® Technology heats the blanket to maximum temperature in just 10 minutes, so there's no need for hours of preheating before bedtime. A standard electric blanket can take up to 2 hours to reach maximum temperature.

Can I wash my electric blanket?toggle

Yes, all Sunbeam electric blankets have detachable controls and waterproof elements, making them safe to wash by hand or in the washing machine. Simply remove the controls and wash the blanket by hand in warm water with a mild detergent, or on a delicate cycle. It can then be line or tumble dried.

Can I use my electric blanket with a waterproof mattress protector?toggle

Yes, you can use your electric blanket with a waterproof mattress protector. If you have a Safe & Sound electric blanket*, it can be placed on top or underneath the mattress protector. If you have a Sunbeam electric blanket that is not from the Safe & Sound range, we recommend that you only place the blanket on TOP of the mattress protector.

Yes. Because Sunbeam's SleepPerfect® Technology constantly monitors the temperature of the blanket to prevent overheating, it is safe to place a mattress protector or fleecy underlay over the top of your electric blanket, providing it does not have a heavy rubber backing.

*Please note: this only applies to Safe & Sound Electric Blankets manufactured from 2005 onwards.

Do I need to use a quilt cover on my Safe & Sound Heated Quilt?toggle

Yes, to provide the best possible performance, it is important to place your heated quilt inside a quilt cover before use. Ensure that you have the quilt positioned with the connectors at the base of the bed and facing upwards, as described in the instructions. Your Heated Quilt is designed to fit inside a standard Queen or King size quilt cover (depending on the size you have purchased), so you do not need to purchase special bed linen.

Quiet Mark

What is the Quiet Mark?toggle

The Quiet Mark is an international mark of approval from the UK Noise Abatement Society Charitable Foundation which encourages companies worldwide in the development of noise reduction.

The main objective of the Quiet Mark is to give consumers a more informed choice when selecting/buying a product, and also encourage manufacturers to continue to drive down the sound output of their appliances and machines to improve the aural environment for everyone.

Why is the Quiet Mark an accreditation from a UK organisation?toggle

The Quiet Mark originated from a UK organisation but now has international recognition and Sunbeam is the first manufacturer to be awarded the Quiet Mark in Australia and New Zealand.

Which Sunbeam products have been awarded the Quiet Mark?toggle

The Cafe Series Variable Temperature Kettle (KE9600) is the first Sunbeam product to be awarded the Quiet Mark in Australia and New Zealand.

How is the Quiet Mark awarded to kettles?toggle

The acousticians at the Association of Noise Consultants measure all kettle sound output in the same way, that is, for the duration of the whole boiling process producing an average LAeq decibel level.  LAeq represents ‘equivalent continuous noise level’.  A small selection of the quietest products are then awarded a Quiet Mark.

What decibel rating is required to achieve the Quiet Mark?toggle

Quiet Mark generally does not mention decibel level numbers because the measurement of sound output is complex, based on a logarithmic scale with many variables, and the outcome is often misinterpreted by the consumer.

The acousticians at the Association of Noise Consultants measure all kettle sound output in the same way, that is, for the duration of the whole boiling process producing an average LAeq decibel level.  LAeq represents ‘equivalent continuous noise level’.

Why has the Sunbeam Cafe Series kettle been awarded the Quiet Mark?toggle

Sunbeam is the first Australian brand to be awarded the Quiet Mark accreditation for the Cafe Series Variable Temperature Kettle (KE9600) because it was found to be one of the quietest kettles on the market and deemed by the jury of listeners to have a 'pleasant and non-intrusive' sound quality.

The average LAeq level for the Sunbeam Cafe Series kettle was under 58 LAeq.  This should not be interpreted as a straight forward 58 ‘decibel level’ at any given point of the boiling process because if the sound output of the kettle was measured at the loudest point only, it would be higher

What is Quiet Boil technology?toggle

Quiet Boil technology is a where a stainless steel disc is positioned on the element floor of the kettle.  As the water is heating, the disc reduces the size of the water bubbles and also helps to disperse them which minimises the noise level.  Once the water reaches boiling temperature it is only then that a bubbling noise can be heard and at this point the kettle automatically switches off.

Mineral deposits in tap water solidify when the water is heated and cooled so regular use of a kettle can lead to the build-up of these minerals which reduces the effectiveness of the Quiet Boil technology.  Therefore, kettles with Quiet Boil technology require regular cleaning in order maintain a quieter performance.

What decibel rating are kettles with Quiet Boil technology?toggle

The Quiet Boil technology available in the market place is the same throughout the whole market and across all manufacturers.  There is no industry standard for the decibel rating of kettles with Quiet Boil technology and it does not necessarily mean that a kettle is quieter than another kettle just because it has the technology.  This is because the noise level of the kettle is also dependent on other factors such as the size, shape, design and materials used.

Why don’t kettles with Quiet Boil technology Quiet boil kettles have the Quiet Mark?toggle

Does the Sunbeam Cafe Series Variable Temperature kettle have Quiet Boil technology?toggle

The Cafe Series Variable Temperature kettle (KE9600) does not have Quiet Boil technology because during the product development stage the Sunbeam team focused on reducing the noise level through the design and engineering without having to add any additional technology.
