The types of coffee machines
Manual: For people who like control over their coffee-making, the coffee grounds are loaded by hand into a cup-shaped filter. Capsule: Easy to use and mess-free, simply insert the sealed capsule (""pod"") of pre-ground, pre-measured coffee. Automatic/Semi-automatic: Decide what you want your coffee machine to do for you. Some models perform tasks at the push of a button, including cleaning the machine. They also offer a range of pre-sets for one, two or three shots of espresso at the push of a button.
Grinding the coffee beans
Some coffee machines have a built-in coffee bean grinder, which can be adjusted for coarse, medium, fine or extra-fine granules. Coffee grinders come in three types: Wheel burr grinders: The beans are crushed between two wheels, one spinning very fast and the other stationary. These can be noisy. Conical burr grinders: A metal cone at the base rotates against another surface at the top. These spin more slowly, tend to clog less and are quieter. Blade grinders: Beans are sliced finely using a blade. These may grind beans unevenly and leave coffee with a slight burnt taste if ground too long. If the espresso maker doesn't have an in-built coffee grinder, you'll need to buy a standalone one or use pre-ground coffee instead.
What is a thermoblock?
This is the internal component of a coffee maker that heats water to the optimum temperature range for making coffee (between 85°C and 96°C). For good flavour it's important that you don't scald the coffee. Machines with twin thermoblocks make coffee quicker because they heat the water for the coffee and create steam for frothing the milk at the same time.

A real workhorse
We bought ours about 7 years ago and it's been fantastic. You are supposed to replace the seals about once every year but we haven't ever and it still makes great coffee. We also have the grinder which we bought separately (there was no combined deal back then) and it has also performed perfectly with no issues. Just grind finer in the summer, coarser in the winter and you will get the desired result.
As another reviewer said the water indicator failed on ours too after about 6 years (i will try his fix).
The machine is still going strong with no maintenance after all these years with daily use. One of the best kitchen products we've ever bought.

Fantastic home coffee machine
We have had this machine for 4 or 5 years now and it has been a very worthwhile purchase. It has well and truly paid for itself.
We love cafe coffees and this machine combined with good quality beans makes the closest I have tried to cafe (and in fact better at times), at a fraction of the cost .
The main thing to note is that it won't make ordinary beans/grind into a fantastic coffee... nothing will!!
It is so easy to use.
Our only problem is that the drainage tray indicator does not always pop up and so the tray overflows.. easy solution is to empty the tray every couple of days regardless.
Also the writing has rubbed off the side knobs with consistent use (I did say we love our coffee). They can be replaced but it doesn't affect the quality of the coffee :)
Please Sunbeam keep up the great quality in all your newer models.

Fantastic Coffee machine
Bought this machine second hand three years ago and loved it ever since. Only thing that's failed was the level indication warning. It started to beep even if the water was full. I fixed it by placing a little magnet where the pickup is. The old one must have lost its power somehow.
Steam pressure is great, would have loved a bit more so that a double of four hole nozzle could be used, but I can texture the milk just fine with the single hole.
I would recommend a finner coffee powder or grind. For shard we used pre ground coffee thinking that's as good as it gets.(harris#5) but since buying a good grinder we are more in love with our coffees than ever before.
The factory settings are spot on given you use the correct grind. If it's too course you'll run through to quickly and slowing the runtime on the program will only give you a smaller shot.
Love this machine and how I can completely tailor the coffee. If you like fiddling and want customised changes to suit your taste than this can do it for you. Howeverhavong a good quality grinder makes for even more possibilities.
Enjoy and I hope this helped.

Both stopped working.
The first one we purchased stopped working in the first week. It was replaced and the new one was great for about 14 months then it started tripping the power. Water was leaking on the bench and making a strange noise. We paid $230 to have it fixed but the first time we tried to use it ( tonight), it turned the power off again! So back to the shop to either refund our $230 or fix for free. We have been without the machine for 6 weeks already. Looks like another new machine, but definitely not one of these again.

A great machine for home / small office. Bonus grinder.
An excellent machine for the price. Pushes out really smooth coffee. A 3 litre tank is very handy in the office, meaning that you are refilling less than you would expect. Filling the tank is as easy as flipping open the lid at the back of the machine, and you can reload straight from the top of the machine - easy access.
The burr grinder is a welcome addition, as these grinders can be expensive add-ons. There are 25 coarseness settings. The more coarse, then lighter your coffee will taste. Finer will of course mean a richer experience. And of course, grinding the beans straight into the filter basket, means fresh tasting coffee. The hopper for the grinder holds around 250g of beans.
There are 2 filter baskets - one for single, espresso-sized beverages, and one for longer pulls, or 2 espressos at once.
You also have a steam wand built in to the machine, as well as a hot water dispenser. I don't use the steam wand, as I only take black coffee, however the steam that does come out is very hot, and great for sterilising things! The water dispenser is a little slow (think of milking a cow), so I just use it to preheat my first cup of the day.
The machine cleans up easily, taking no more than 2-3 minutes at the end of the day.
All in all, a great, low maintenance machine, that hopefully will bring me lots of hot, bitter brown water for years to come!

Good machine - apart from steam dial breaking
Bought this one nearly three years ago and we were very happy with the coffee and the unit generally until this happened...the 'variable steam steam control dial' has broken. So I cannot now make my morning flat white which makes me very grumpy...the machine makes great coffee however it is out of warranty and now I'm not sure what to do...could you assist Sunbeam?
