Five Spice Tofu with Dipping Sauce

  • 2 x 300g blocks firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons sea salt flakes
  • ¾ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon five spice powder
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 cup plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon breadcrumbs
  • Dipping Sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoi sin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons salt reduced soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 1 green onion, sliced thinly


  1. Cut each block into 6 even pieces, halve each piece diagonally. Place tofu in single layer and drain on absorbent paper for 20 minutes.
  2. Crush salt with pepper and spices till a fine powder. Combine spice mixture with flour and breadcrumbs.
  3. Coat tofu pieces in flour mixture, heat oil to 180C and deep fry about 10 pieces at a time, until golden brown, about 5 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, combine ingredients for dipping sauce.
  5. Drain and serve with dipping sauce if desired.
