Hints & Tips

The types of coffee machines

Manual: For people who like control over their coffee-making, the coffee grounds are loaded by hand into a cup-shaped filter. Capsule: Easy to use and mess-free, simply insert the sealed capsule (""pod"") of pre-ground, pre-measured coffee. Automatic/Semi-automatic: Decide what you want your coffee machine to do for you. Some models perform tasks at the push of a button, including cleaning the machine. They also offer a range of pre-sets for one, two or three shots of espresso at the push of a button.

Grinding the coffee beans

Some coffee machines have a built-in coffee bean grinder, which can be adjusted for coarse, medium, fine or extra-fine granules. Coffee grinders come in three types: Wheel burr grinders: The beans are crushed between two wheels, one spinning very fast and the other stationary. These can be noisy. Conical burr grinders: A metal cone at the base rotates against another surface at the top. These spin more slowly, tend to clog less and are quieter. Blade grinders: Beans are sliced finely using a blade. These may grind beans unevenly and leave coffee with a slight burnt taste if ground too long. If the espresso maker doesn't have an in-built coffee grinder, you'll need to buy a standalone one or use pre-ground coffee instead.

What is a thermoblock?

This is the internal component of a coffee maker that heats water to the optimum temperature range for making coffee (between 85°C and 96°C). For good flavour it's important that you don't scald the coffee. Machines with twin thermoblocks make coffee quicker because they heat the water for the coffee and create steam for frothing the milk at the same time.

Customer Reviews

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Spend a little more to get better quality Bought this machine lastnight It's a perfect size and looks like the real deal however... the espresso isnt automatic which means you need to stop the water flow when your shot size is at the desired amount. There is also a leak in the water canister so I'll be returning the product. Would suggest spending a bit more money to get that slightly better quality

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Neat, fast and easy to use! This is the perfect little manual machine for one or two fast cups of coffee! I wanted to get a reasonably priced, new manual machine that was fast and easy to use, and this is perfect! Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Machine! We thought we'd try out this little Sunbeam coffee Machine (EM2800) because of its convenient size and exceptional price. The verdict is ...... my husband and I love it! We had a Breville Cafe Roma before this that served us well for many years so thought we'd just buy the new model - Breville Venezia. Our friend has this model though and we found it a bit bulky for our liking so purchased the Sunbeam instead. We find the Sunbeam very easy to use, easy to clean, takes up much less space on the kitchen bench and produces lovely coffee just like our old Breville did. What a great little machine and what a great price!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from You get more than what you pay for This was tremendous value for money. Making enough for a single coffee or two coffees (two measures supplied), and a good frother (jug supplied). The only negative is that you have to be there to make the coffee as it doesn't auto shut off, but hey, for this price I can stand there. Uses ground coffee and you need a mug or cup that sits low as a tall mug cannot cope. Great little machine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too good to be true I did my research and read lots of reviews on this machine, so I was expecting something good. Not amazing, but okay. The main reason I bought it was for the milk, as I hate having just milk.. I love the silk and creamy milk we get when we buy a coffee in a cafe. This machine just can’t do it. It doesn’t have enough power and the milk doesn’t even get warm, doesn’t move, nothing. I ended up hearing my milk in the microwave. Extremely disappointed. Just wast of money. Rated 1 out of 5 by from too much plastic Okay coffee, quick and easy to use. I think the water doesn't take long enough to filter through and this affects the taste. Fits well in our very very small kitchen. Incredibly disappointed in the amount of plastic in the build of the machine and the handle. All previous basic Sunbeam Models have been metal, not plastic. Requires the machine to be steady when putting the handle in as the machine as it moves it is so light. Have had Sunbeam coffee machines basic models for many years, the plastic is new to the range and it seems cheap.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't last long This machine was good for the first couple of months or so and then became basically completely useless. Once the seal is ruined you basically can't make a decent cup of coffee. If you clamp the coffee at all then the water can't make it through the rinds and instead sprays out of the top squirting hot water and coffee rinds directly into your coffee cup and all over your bench. You can avoid this by not clamping your coffee at all but this obviously results in a cup of coffee which is basically just a cup of water. The steamer is also not very good. This machine is sold at a good price but for me it wasn't worth it as it didn't last long at all. It is clearly made very cheaply and poorly made. The seal component being made of cheap soft plastic is obviously not heavy duty enough.
