Rated 3 out of 5 by from Tap & Go feature is misleading The tap & go feature for the grinder is misleading. I would have expected i could tap for grinds, go and do something else while the machine grinds a set amount into the basket...but no... you have to stand there and hold the portafilter down the whole time to get grinds. This also means i get an inconsistent amount of coffee as i have to guess the right amount instead of having timed settings. As someone who has used the Breville Barista pro at my workplace, where one tap fills the basket with grinds, this feature seems backwards and not very convenient. Sunbeam please correct me if i am understanding the Tap & Go feature correctly?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value and quality I had been thinking about getting the Sunbeam Mini Barista for quite some time, but wanted to avoid pre-ground beans so was looking at grinders as well (which are not cheap for good ones). When I realised this had a decent grinder included, and was designed for fresh ground beans too (single-wall baskets) so wouldn't require further purchases, I went for it. Very happy with the results, even for a novice it's easy to produce good quality coffee and even supermarket beans are producing good results. The grinder suggests a setting of 10 to start, even with the not-very-fresh beans this was too fine, I'm back on around 13 or 14 and getting good extraction. This is easy to adjust if needed. Startup takes only a minute, grinding isn't too loud, steam wand is easy to use and quieter than grinding (or you're doing it wrong, which is an important point). For what it is and does I think this is a perfect entry-level product into quality home coffee, with the grinder and steam wand giving full capability and flexibility (plus being fun, at least for now!). A solid step up from pods even if you don't get it quite right, it is single thermoblock so you can't produce a steady stream of cups (extraction and steam need to be done separately) but if you want to get that serious you should probably look at more expensive machines anyway. Visitors used to only instant or pods appreciate the coffee, can be stepped through doing the process themselves which improves the enjoyment factor, while visitors with similar or better machines are happy enough with the results because it's a 'real' machine. Anyone who likes coffee should consider this machine, build quality seems good and produces excellent coffee for fans. People making the step from instant or pods will love it and appreciate the difference without having to spend much more for bigger and bulkier machines. Things to note: - Check coffee cup clearance height, very tall mugs won't fit but this machine is better than some others so something to be aware of. - As mentioned above, single thermoblock means coffee extraction and steam wand have to be done separately, takes 10-15 secs to switch, this is fine for a cup or three but if you're thinking of serving a crowd it won't work - you need to spend more for that. - Milk jug included is big enough for a normal mug flat white, 2 mugs 'americano' style (added water). Doesn't take too long to texture milk and foam keeps the heat in, so again for typical home use it's fine. - Easy to keep clean, drip tray easy to remove and empty, excess grinds have their own dry catcher, machine looks new when wiped down, really solid and quality appearance. Big enough to impress, small enough to fit on the bench with other appliances.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Machine I have been out of the coffee machine market for a long time but when my old machine finally gave up I was suddenly very interested in what was available. I came across the Barista Max which had what I consider essential – an integrated grinder with variable settings and a proper café style group head and handle. It sits neat on the bench and with a bit of playing around I found the perfect setting for my favourite beans – delicious coffee’s every time! You can go to town on these things, but for me this machine has the right mix of high quality componentry and ease of use, perfect for our family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for beginners AND professionals! I've never owned a coffee machine before but my wife used to be a barista so finding the right machine for us was a challenge. It needed to be easy enough for me to use, but with the features of a professional machine that my wife was used to. This completely met our needs. Everything just made sense right away! It's a real joy to use each morning and produces some of the best coffee I've ever tasted. And being an all-in-one machine means it doesn't take up much bench space at all! I recommend this machine whether it's your first or if you're a seasoned pro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Espresso martinis at my place? I was always a bit put off the idea of buying an espresso machine because I live close to cafes and assumed I'd never make a coffee as good. I was drawn to the simplicity of this machine, and the convenience of the integrated grinder. It's pretty hard to make a bad coffee on this machine. Everything is set up to make it as easy as possible and the results I'm getting are great. I'm super smug heading out the door each morning with my coffee already in hand. My mum was so impressed with the machine she bought one for herself. Also, a bonus benefit is I can make some cracking espresso martinis at home now. Danger!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Thought Out and Great Performance I've owned a few coffee machines in my time, from Italian traditional marques through to newer brands, including two previous Brevilles. The Italian machines made great coffee but were expensive and manual. You needed some expertise and familiarity. With a wife who wants a great coffee but doesn't want to spend time to become an expert this was a problem, so we bought our first Cafe series Breville semi-auto a few years back. It did not have a built-in grinder so I relied on my tried and true 'Italian Job'. I had some doubts initially but I was won over by the Breville's features and performance and my wife much preferred its convenience! As we are soon downsizing to an apartment she suggested we should look at a coffee machine with a built-in grinder to save bench space. Again I had my doubts but based on our satisfaction with the existing Sunbeam we starting looking at the Barista-Max. When we received it, I unpacked and read the instructions (!) and was pleased that they were clear and easy to understand. Nice! I filled up the grinder and set to the recommended starting point on the dial of '10' but quickly saw that it was way too fine and went for '15'. Made the first cup but still too fine and very little liquid came out so I changed to '20' and this time, it was just about right for the coffee I had. An immediate plus point; the dial is easy to read and very precise. I then switched to the milk and at first wasn't sure if I had set it correctly as no steam came out and I then realised it needed a bit of time to build up pressure, about 10 seconds and then the 'Steam' light comes on. My other Sunbeam allows you to make coffee and froth at the same time. This does not and although preferable it adds a fair bit to the purchasing price and it's not a major issue. When the steam arrived it was good and powerful and it was pretty quick to produce a thick and creamy foam ( I was about to write 'froth' but that wouldn't do it justice!). I've now made a few, as has my wife and we are more than pleased with the quality of the coffee and convenience. I like the 'grind to order' as well, no stale excess in the hopper. My wife loves the design features such as being able to fit a mug under the group head, the accessory store and retractable power lead which keeps the bench tidy and easy to clean. She believes it was designed by a woman! An excellent machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best start to the day Having recently upgraded my excellent Sunbeam Mini Barista, i was pleased to find that the Barista Max fits nicely where the other machine sat. It's a little bit bigger but still quite a compact machine. Having a built-in coffee grinder is very convenient. It may take 1 or 2 shots though to find your ideal grind level - mine is set to 16. The machine comes with everything you need to enjoy barista-style coffee in your own home. Once you taste freshly ground coffee there isn't any going back. There is a noticeable difference in freshness when using coffee beans over pre-ground coffee from the supermarket. This machine is quick to start up, excellent at producing silky smooth milk and is easy to keep clean. It also has a hidden compartment for the accessories. A brilliant all-round coffee machine!
